MAKING 'GULA MELAKA'
Minimum 25 pax
1 hour From RM 5.00 per person

'Gula Melaka' (coconut palm sugar) is originally derived from a sap of the shoot of the coconut palm tree. The agile farmer has to climb the palm tree early in the morning and use a sharp knife to slice the tip of the shoot of the coconut palm tree in order to get the sugar. Overnight, a sweet, foul smelling sap collects in the container, which will later be mixed with a small quantity of flour to thick it.

The mixture is boiled and stirred in large iron woks for about 2 hours. Finally, the concentrated 'Gula Melaka' is transferred into small hollow bamboo containers. After the cooling period of 30 minutes, the 'Gula Melaka' is ready to be used as a sweetener for local cakes and the ever-famous Melaka Cendol.
