Handicrafts

Craft lovers come to Melaka in search of unique handicrafts to bring home as memorabilia of their trip to Melaka or as souvenirs for relatives and friends. Bound feet shoes, batik and nyonya kebayas, pewter and silverware are among popular gifts and they can be found in various shops around Melaka.

Batik (Textiles & Fabric)

Batik is a traditional Malay wear dating back to the 15th century when it was worn as sarongs by both men and women. Today, batik has been fashioned into all sorts of things that tourists can pick up as souvenirs - clothes, handkerchiefs, sandals, tablecloths, slip covers, lipstick holders and even lampshades. Batik prints are often colourful and can range from floral designs and geometric patterns to landscapes.

Sari

Saris are traditional Indian wear - beautiful layers of richly coloured fabric made from cotton, silk and organza. Some sari fabrics are decorated with colourful beads, crystals and semi-precious stones, making them more expensive. Visit Indian fabric shops along Jalan Laksamana, Jalan Bendahara and Kamdar to see them for yourselves.

Nyonya Kebaya

Nyonya kebayas are tailored tunics of exquisitely embroidered, see-through Swiss voile (Casa robia), silk or cotton and were once worn by Nyonya ladies with a 'batik sarong', 'kerongsang' (a series of 3 jewelled brooches) and beaded slippers. Walk into shops in the old town and you will be hard pressed not to fall in love with these elegant creations that are now reemerging as a mark of grace and sophistication.

Pewter

Pewter is a tin-based metal alloyed with varying amounts of other metals such as lead, antimony, bismuth, copper or zinc to make it stronger and harder to be cast into a wide variety of miniature items. Malaysian pewter is famous worldwide and items such as the Malay kris, photo frames, figurines and key chains can also be bought at handicraft shops in Melaka.

Bound Feet Shoes

The tradition to bind the feet of young girls originated in China as bound feet were considered the epitome of beauty and good breeding for Chinese women up till the early 20th century. Though few women with bound feet are still alive today, traditional skills required to make these delicate and dainty shoes have been preserved. Bring a pair home as wonderful souvenirs of Melaka's rich Chinese cultural heritage.

Beaded Slippers

Beaded slippers, also known as 'kasut manek-manek' were used by Nyonya ladies in the olden days for formal occasions like weddings and festivals. Multi-coloured glass beads are hand embroidered with gold or silver thread on silk cloth before being sewn on to flat or slightly heeled leather soles. They were worn with the Nyonya kebaya and now make a unique fashion statement.
