Antiques Shops |
|
| |
There are numerous antique shops, in particular those along the narrow Jonker Street that call to the window shopper, souvenir hunter or serious collector. Browse shops for old paraphernalia and 'batik' clothing in a variety of designs. Buy beautifully embroidered 'nyonya kebayas', 'sarongs' and dress them up with antique brooches called 'kerongsang'. Search also for exquisite porcelain, ceramics, period furniture, silverware and brassware, some proudly on display, some hidden behind dusty nooks and crannies. |

Antique Furniture |
|
| |
Period furniture and household items such as majestic brass beds, camphor chests, ornately carved cupboards and rosewood furniture inlaid with mother of pearl can be found in several antique galleries. More than a piece of decor or conversation starter, they echo the glory days of the past from the Dutch and British eras to pre-independent Malaya. |

Antique Sculptures |
|
| |
Melaka was a melting pot of Asian and Western influences, thus it is not impossible to discover Western bronze statues or statues of Asian deities and legendary figures carved from stone, jade or wood. Some opulent sculptures were even decorated with precious gems. |

Antique Jewellery |
|
| |
The fine skills of the olden day Malay, Chinese and Indian craftsmen can still be seen in beautiful vintage filigree silverware and gold ware that once adorned wealthy ladies and were seen as symbols of social distinction and prestige. Look for earrings, necklaces, rings, bangles, anklets, decorative hairpins and brooches, some mounted with expensive and high quality gemstones. |

Antique Porcelain and Ceramics |
|
| |
Porcelain is thought to have originated in China and was considered one of the most admired Chinese inventions by the West. Porcelain and ceramic utensils such as vases, bowls, chopsticks, water containers and plates that can be found in Melaka date back to the Sung, Ming and Qing dynasties. Dutch and Japanese porcelain and ceramics can also be found here. |
