Melaka's Sultanate Palace
The wooden replica of Melaka's Sultanate Palace was built based on description
and reference to the old palace in 'Sejarah Melayu' (The Malay Annals).
It houses the Cultural Museum of Melaka and is situated at the foot of
St. Paul's Hill.

Proclamation of Independence Memorial
Built in 1912, the former club house of Melaka Club now houses exhibits
of the country's struggle leading up to Independence. Exhibits include
historical documents, photographs, maps, paintings, costumes, artifacts,
currency and others.

A' Famosa / Porta de Santiago
This hallmark of Melaka was built by the Portuguese in 1511 as a fortress. It sustained severe damage during the Dutch invasion in 1641. Timely intervention by Sir Stamford Raffles and Lord Minto in 1808 saved what remains of the fort today.

Light and Sound Spectacular
To understand the history of Melaka, watch the Light and Sound Spectacular
at Dataran Pahlawan, Bandar Hilir, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.
Significant historical events are re-enacted by means of lights, narration,
dialogue, music and drama.

St. Paul's Church
Built by a Portuguese captain named Duarte Coelho. It was turned into a burial ground and fortress by the Dutch and renamed 'St. Paul's Church'. St. Francis Xavier was briefly buried here in 1553 before his remains were shipped to Goa, India.

The Governor's Museum
The Governor's Museum commemorates the important role played by the Governor's
office in Melaka. Among the museum's collections are portraits, official
costumes, medals, decorations and personal collections of past and present
governors.

The Stadthuys
Built in the 17th century as the official residence of Dutch Governors
and their officers, the Stadthuys is an excellent example of Dutch architecture. It now houses the History and Ethnography Museum, displaying relics from
Melaka's glorious past.

Christ Church
Dating back to 1753, the church is testimony to Dutch architectural ingenuity.
Take note of the church's handmade pews, ceiling beams constructed without
joints, a brass Bible, tombstones written in Armenian and the 'Last Supper'
in glazed tiles.

Clock Tower
The clock tower was erected in 1886 by the Tan family using a clock imported
from England. In 1982, the old clock was replaced by a new one and it is
still functioning, to date. The tower is located next to the Queen Victoria
Fountain in Dutch Square.

The Dutch Graveyard
This graveyard was first used at the last quarter of the 17th century.
Presently 5 Dutch and 33 British graves are sited within its compound.
This cemetery was used in two stages, between 1670 -1682 and later, between
1818 -1838.

St. Francis Xavier's Church
Built in 1849 by Reverend Favre, a Frenchman, this Gothic-towered church
is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier who is well remembered in Melaka for
his missionary work and for spreading Catholicism to Southeast Asia in
the 16th century.

Malaysia Youth Museum
The museum is dedicated to the contribution of the youth to the country's
economic and social well-being. The noble efforts evident at regional,
national and international levels are displayed at the museum.

Museum Rakyat (People's Museum)
Exhibits include records of Melaka's economic and social progress spanning
from the period after the independence of Malaya till the present day.
The exhibits are segmented into tourism, agriculture, industry and other
sectors.

Maritime Museum Complex
The museum was built in the image of the 'Flor De La Mar', the Portuguese
galleon that sank in the Straits of Melaka on its way to Portugal, laden
with Melaka's treasures. Visitors can have a closer look at Melaka's history
from the 14th-19th centuries.

The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum
Babas and Nyonyas are descendants of the early Chinese immigrants to Melaka
who intermarried with local women and created a unique community that has
fused the cultural traditions of both races. View their unique heritage
at this private museum on Heeren Street.

Jonker Walk
The place to be for antique collectors and bargain hunters. Authentic artifacts
and relics can be found among a host of modern ornaments, collectibles
and souvenirs. Look closely and you may find old tradesmen who still practice
their vanishing skills such as silver smithing.

Hang Kasturi's Mausoleum
Hang Kasturi studied 'silat' (Malay martial art) along with Hang Tuah,
Hang Jebat, Hang Lekir and Hang Lekiu. He became one of the 'hulubalangs'
(knights) of Melaka. Except for Hang Jebat, Hang Kasturi and the others
remained loyal to the sultan to their dying days.

Hang Jebat's Mausoleum
The story of the death duel between two best friends, Hang Tuah and Hang
Jebat is legendary; one for the love of his best friend, the other for
the love of his Sultan. Hang Jebat ran amok and died after suffering a
fatal wound from Hang Tuah's 'keris' (kris), Taming Sari.

Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple
One of the first Hindu temples in the country, built in 1781 on a plot
of land given by the Dutch. To this day, the temple still serves as an
active social and spiritual centre for Melaka's Hindu community, particularly
during religious festivals.

Kampung Kling Mosque
Here is one of the oldest mosques in the country with Sumatran features
that also reflect a mixture of East-West architectural influences. Instead
of a conventional dome, a three-tier roof rising like a pyramid is in place
while the minaret is structured like a pagoda.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple
Also known as the 'Temple of Evergreen Clouds', this is the oldest functioning
Chinese temple in the country. It was built in 1646 ornately decorated
mythological figures, carvings and lacquer work distinguish this temple
from all others in Melaka.

Kampung Hulu's Mosque
Kampung Hulu Mosque was built by Dato' Samsudin in 1728. It is the oldest
mosque in Malaysia. Its unique multi-tiered 'meru' roof owes its inspiration
to ancient Hindu temples and its watch-tower minaret is typical of early
mosques in Sumatera and Java.

Villa Sentosa, Kampung Morten
The house, built in the early 20th century in the style fashionable during
the era, has been converted into a private museum. Located in Kampung Morten,
the only Malay village in the heart of Melaka city, it houses costume,
embroidery, furniture and weaponry collections.

St. Peter's Church
St. Peter's Church was built in 1710 during the Dutch occupation of Melaka.
It is the oldest standing Roman Catholic Church in Malaysia. As an important
community centre, St. Peter's Church comes alive when the faithful congregate
here during feast days and celebrations.

Bukit China
'Chinese Hill' was the official settlement of the Chinese entourage that
arrived with Princess Hang Li Poh who was sent to Melaka to marry Sultan
Mansur Shah. Today, it is the largest Chinese cemetery outside China with
tombs dating from the Ming Dynasty.

Poh San Teng Temple
Engraved in the 1795 stele in this graveyard temple is the name Poh San
Teng and the story of its founding by Kapitan Chua Su Cheong so that prayers
for those buried on Bukit China could be conducted properly. The main deity
for this temple is 'Tua Pek Kong', as is the norm for all graveyard temples.

Hang Li Poh's Well
Known as the Sultan's Well and Hang Li Poh's Well, it is called 'San Pao
Ching' in the Chinese language. According to legend, the well has never
dried up and was the only source of water during a great drought. Many
believe that if you throw a coin in, you will return to Melaka one day.

Masjid Al-Azim (Al-Azim Mosque)
Melaka's state mosque was built in 1984 at the cost of RM19.5 million.
In 1990, the mosque was officiated by DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Dipertuan
Agong Sultan Azlan Shah, the then King of Malaysia and continues to serve
as an important community focal point.

St. John's Fort
Located on St John's Hill, this fort was first a private Portuguese chapel
dedicated to St. John the Baptist and then a fort with cannons facing inland
to protect Melaka from hinterland attacks. It was rebuilt by the Dutch
in the 18th century.

Portuguese Square
Portuguese Square is a symbolic cultural emblem located within the Portuguese
Settlement. Eurasian descendants from all over Malaysia gather around the
square during holidays and festivals. Inside the square are restaurants,
souvenir shops and a small museum.

Kampung Chitty
The Chittys are descendants of intermarriages between Indian traders from
South India and local women several hundred years ago. Like the Babas and
Nyonyas, they have melded and embraced both Indian and local traditions
as can be observed in this village.

Tranquerah Mosque
Prominent in its architectural grandeur, the mosque is unique and bears
testimony to the fact that Islam had its rightful place in Melaka almost
600 years ago. Sultan Hussain of Johor who signed the cession of
Singapore with Sir Stamford Raffles is entombed here.

Hang Tuah Mall
Hang Tuah Mall, based on the Bintang walk concept in Kuala Lumpur, is the
latest shopping attraction in Melaka. The 1.5 km sidewalk is a modern,
lighted pedestrian mall with various shops selling souvenirs, food and
beverages, and other merchandise.

Melaka Sentral
Melaka Sentral is a 3 component development project comprising of the biggest
bus and taxi terminal in the country, a market and a bazaar. The brainchild
of Melaka's Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Haji Mohd Ali bin Mohd Rustam, Melaka
Sentral was opened in 2004.

Hang Tuah's Mausoleum
The outstanding military exploits of the warrior Admiral Hang Tuah and
his four comrades: Hang Jebat, Hang Lekiu, Hang Lekir and Hang Kasturi
have made him a legend in the history of Melaka. Numerous stories abound
of his end and he is said to have been buried here.

Hang Tuah's Well
Located in Kampung Duyong where Hang Tuah was born and spent his childhood
among four of his good friends who later become the famous knights of Melaka.
It is rumoured that some people have seen a white crocodile, said to be
the spirit of Hang Tuah, in the well.

The best way to enjoy Melaka in a slow and laid-back manner. The trishaw
will take you through streets and corners of Melaka that you may miss out
if you go on your own. The trishaw can be rented on an hourly or distance
covered basis at the Stadthuys.

Melaka River
The development, cleaning and beautification project of the Melaka River
Estuary (Phase 1 and 2) is now fully completed and will be followed by
Phase 3 (Parcel 4). The main purpose of this project is to attract more
tourists to come and visit Melaka as well as to provide better infrastructure
for the public.
