Melaka is a city with a glorious past. Every step you take brings you closer to wondrous historical treasures where enchanting stories bear the tale of a time long ago. Being the second smallest state in Malaysia does little to deter Melaka from being one of the wealthiest when it comes to history, culture and heritage.
The state of Melaka is located in the south-west corner of Peninsular Malaysia, facing the Straits of Melaka. With an area of only 1,658 square kilometers, Melaka is divided into three districts, namely Alor Gajah, Central and Jasin. Like many Southeast Asian cities, Melaka is generally warm and sunny, with temperatures hovering around 32 and 34 degrees Celsius. However, it has been common in recent years to encounter long, dry spells and slightly cooler nights with temperatures of about 24 to 26 degrees Celsius.
The State Government has set a vision to turn Melaka into a developed by the year 2010, with tourism as one of the major development sectors. Teetering on the brink of 21st century living and technology, Melaka is poised for progress while delicately trying to balance its over 600 years of history, culture and tradition. Melaka has many reputable public and private hospitals and clinics that provide a high standard of medical care should you fall ill while on vacation here. If you carry medical or travel insurance, do ensure it is up to date and covers your trip to avoid unnecessary hassles. Local pharmacies carry reasonably priced and good quality medication for general illness like flu and food poisoning too. For an extra precaution, avoid consuming unclean food and drinks made from unboiled tap water.

Malaysia carries very low cases such as dengue, typhoid and malarial fever risks which occasionally reported. Nevertheless, there are often isolated and do not pose as health threats. |

Safety |

Generally, Melaka is one of the safest and friendliest places to visit in Malaysia and indeed, Asia. Melaka Tourist Police Unit was formed on 12 June 1985 and the main role of this units is to monitor the safety of the public, as well as giving assistance to the tourist in terms of road directions and provide right information about the tourism product in Melaka. There are 20 officers currently in-charged in this unit while the other 7 officers are responsible to specialize in the Special Horse Police Unit.

Language |

The national language of Malaysia is Bahasa Malaysia. In Melaka, English is widely spoken and understood. In some places, Mandarin and other Chinese dialects such as Hokkien, Cantonese, Tamil and Hindi. What's makes Melaka to be different from other states are the dialect s spoken by the Portuguese, Chitty and Baba Nyonya communities, namely Kristang, Chitty Malay and Baba Malay that are not to be found anywhere else in Malaysia. |

All visitors seeking entry into Malaysia require a valid passport. Besides that, foreigners who are planning to enter Malaysia must possess a valid visa for Malaysia. |

A foreigners means a person who is not citizen of the Commonwealth except Pakistan or a British Protected Person or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, Switzerland, Brunei, Singapore and the Netherlands. Nationals of countries which have entered into Partial or Total Visa Abolition Agreements with Malaysia may be allowed entry depending on the terms of the agreements. In simpler words, Commonwealth citizens and some European nationals do not need visas for visits of less than three months, being issued with extendable 30-60 day visas upon arrival.

A valid entry permit, re-entry permit or pass must be in possession of a person seeking to enter Malaysia, provided such a person is not within the categories of prohibited immigrants. Such permits are either available at Malaysian points of ntry, on or before arrival in the country , or before departure from Malaysia as may occur. |

The local currency is in 'Ringgit Malaysia' (RM) and they are available in denominations of RM1, RM2, RM5, RM10, RM50 and RM100. Malaysia coins are minted in denomination of 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, and 50 cents. Credit cards are accepted in most parts of Melaka City. If you intend to change traveler's cheques, you can do so at hotels, commercial banks and authorized money changers.
