Melaka's position as a growing maritime power enabled it to spread Islam, state power, the Malay language and culture across the archipelago through trade, marriages and conquests. At the height of her power, Melaka ruled Manjong, Selangor, Batu Pahat, Kampar, Siak, Rokan, Inderagiri, Johor, Muar, Jambi and briefly, Pasai. Good diplomatic relations with the Ming Dynasty of China, the most powerful country in Asia, ensured Melaka's protection from external pressure exerted by rival states, such as Siam. |
