  Founding of Melaka

The Melaka Sultanate of Melaka (1396-1511)

In 1396, Parameswara and his followers from Temasik established a settlement at Bertam near the estuary of the Melaka River. According to legend, one day, Parameswara went hunting with his followers. He stopped to rest under a tree by the river and witnessed an unusual display of courage by a mouse-deer that kicked one of the hunting dogs into the river. Inspired by the mouse deer's courage, he freed the animal and decided to make his kingdom in this auspicious land. He named it 'Melaka' after the tree he had earlier rested under.

The Melaka Sultanate administration based in the Grand Palace comprised of three major levels, namely the Sultan, four senior officials and local chieftains whose main purpose was to facilitate a flowering spice trade. Islam was introduced to Melaka by the Indian and Arab traders in the early 1400s. Parameswara himself converted to Islam and named himself  Raja Iskandar Shah after marrying a princess from the Muslim kingdom of Pasai. When Sheikh Abdul Aziz of Jeddah arrived in Melaka, Islam was made the state religion.

Melaka's position as a growing maritime power enabled it to spread Islam, state power, the Malay language and culture across the archipelago through trade, marriages and conquests. At the height of her power, Melaka ruled Manjong, Selangor, Batu Pahat, Kampar, Siak, Rokan, Inderagiri, Johor, Muar, Jambi and briefly, Pasai. Good diplomatic relations with the Ming Dynasty of China, the most powerful country in Asia, ensured Melaka's protection from external pressure exerted by rival states, such as Siam.

Towards the end of the 15th century, Melaka had become a renowned empire and till today, the legends and folk stories that sprung from that era are cherished and remembered by Malaysians.
